In a state full of mountains and rivers, it might surprise you that many youth in rural Colorado have never had a chance to explore the outdoors. That’s why our partnership with the Western Slope School Career Collaborative (WSSCC) is so important.
This year, we led twelve students from rural areas of Colorado’s Western Slope on a seven-day backpacking expedition through the San Juan Mountains.
The course was fully scholarship funded thanks to WSSCC—making it accessible for students who might not otherwise be able to participate. Most of the students had little to no experience hiking and camping, despite being surrounded by the Colorado Rockies in their hometowns.
As the crew traveled deep in the mountains during peak wildflower season, they climbed mountains, learned how to camp, and connected with new friends. For many of the students, it was more than just a trip – it was a transformation.

One student, age 17, shared his experience:
I challenged myself physically and mentally more than I thought I could. I saw my group get stronger, braver, happier, faster, and more at peace during this trip. It gave me the opportunity to learn about others and myself.

He added,
I found peace within and acknowledged my strengths on the outside. I pushed myself past where I thought I could and gave myself motivation from within. Thank you for this amazing opportunity.
In addition to developing confidence, the students built a support network with peers from nearby high schools—connections that will help them launch careers in their communities and beyond.
This is what Outward Bound is all about—turning the outdoors into a classroom for discovery, connection, and confidence.

Our expedition with WSSCC was one of the many Partnership Programs we facilitated in 2024. Thank you to WSSCC for making this partnership possible!
