At the Colorado Outward Bound School (COBS), we are committed to increasing access to the outdoors – including increasing access to careers in the outdoor industry. Since 2018, the Fellowship for Emerging Leaders has been working to do just that.
The Fellowship provides hands-on training, certifications, gear, and travel support for incoming Instructors at our Rocky Mountain Program. More than that, it’s a community—one where Fellows can connect and receive one-on-one mentorship from alumni of the Fellowship. Since its beginning, the Fellowship has supported 28 individuals, with many going on to continue their career at COBS and shape the outdoor field in inspiring ways.

Here are three powerful stories from our 2024 Fellows that show how this program creates lasting impact:
Edmund’s Story: Empowering Future Leaders
“I’m thrilled to contribute to this year’s impact stories,” Edmund writes. “Just yesterday, I heard from a former student who earned an Army ROTC scholarship at her top three college choices. She said the lessons she learned during our time together at COBS helped her grow into a leader—and I was honored to write her recommendation letter.”
As a Fellow and Instructor, Edmund has seen how the COBS experience goes beyond the backcountry. “For many students, their course is a turning point. It gives them grit, resilience, and a new vision for their future. And for BIPOC students, having an instructor who shares part of their background makes that transformation even more powerful.”
Brighton’s Story: Finding Community and Purpose
“The COBS Fellowship gave me more than experience—it helped me find out who I am and what kind of people I want around me,” says Brighton.
Brighton shares the joy of seeing a former student and fellow BIPOC community member grow into an instructor. “It’s so meaningful to watch our staff become more diverse every summer, and to be part of a workplace that truly values that. It feels like coming home to a space where you’re seen, celebrated, and supported.”
Roo’s Story: A Space to Grow
“The Fellowship created a space where I felt safe sharing ideas and being myself,” says Roo. “We had deep conversations, lots of laughter, and space to lead. That supportive environment made my time at COBS richer and more meaningful.”
These stories are just a glimpse into the ripple effect of the Fellowship for Emerging Leaders. The Fellowship doesn’t just build skills—it builds community, careers, and the next generation of outdoor leaders.
