This summer, we welcomed back a longtime partner—Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS)—for a week-long adventure down Cataract Canyon. COPS supports youth who have experienced the loss of a loved one in the line of duty.
For many young people, grief can feel isolating. Our goal during this expedition was to create a space where youth and adults with shared experiences could connect, heal, and feel supported while discovering new strengths in the outdoors.
The seven-day rafting expedition brought together 18 students and three mentors for a meaningful journey on the river. It wasn’t just about paddling and camping—it was about learning to take time for reflection and connection, all while navigating a powerful, beautiful canyon together.
For many, the experience was full of small but important breakthroughs. One student reflected:
I’ve struggled relating to people in my hometown, but coming to this program made me realize that I am not alone.

Another student shared:
Being on the river I learned many new things such as… you’re not always going to look your best, but that doesn’t change how people view you.

One of the most touching parts of the trip came from one of the adult mentors, who had once been a student on a COBS course himself. Coming back years later in a mentorship role, he shared:
I continue to learn, grow, and cherish my time on course. Every year comes new life challenges, and every year new lessons and experiences. I feel at home when I am on course… I truly don’t know where I would be without Outward Bound.

These reflections are at the heart of what we do. Our courses are not just outdoor adventures—they’re journeys of personal growth, connection, and healing. For the COPS crew, this time on the river reminded them they are not alone, and that together, they can move forward—one paddle stroke at a time.

Our expedition with Concerns of Police Survivors was one of the many Partnership Programs we facilitated in 2024.
