Black Tie & Tennis Shoes Gala
November 1, 2013–
At the Colorado Outward Bound School’s annual Black Tie & Tennis Shoe Gala, held on Friday, October 18 at the Seawell Grand Ballroom, we gathered more than 400 supporters, educators, community members and friends to celebrate 51 years of school history, and to introduce Outward Bound as Education for Life. We looked at five decades of past achievements as well as those “mountains” we have yet to climb, with the help of some very special guests.
The evening’s program, sponsored by Toyota and Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, featured an interview with mountaineering legends Jim Whittaker and Tom Hornbein (facilitated by two Outward Bound Everest mountaineers, Pete Athans and Luis Benitez).
Discussion focused on not only the inside details of their grueling Everest expeditions but also on insights from Jim and Tom on what brought them to the base – and to the top – of this elite mountain, and what “education for life” lessons were derived from their experience.
To share the stage with these men was to fulfill a childhood dream. I’ve watched these guys’ career my entire life. It was totally surreal. –Luis Benitez, Everest Mountaineer and COBS board member
Gala attendees also heard from the ever-compelling Antonio Vigil, School Director of Denver-based STRIVE Preparatory Schools SMART Academy and innovator in education reform. In an effort to extend the reward of the summit to new generations, COBS has partnered with STRIVE to launch the ASCEND Program, a wilderness-based complement to the “mountains” that the college-bound STRIVE students are climbing every day.
